IRC Helper
About
IRC Helper is a plugin to handle the rough edges of the IRC protocol and make it behave like the other protocols in libpurple. Currently, the two major features are:
- Transparent authentication with a variety of services.
- Suppression of various useless messages.
It also has some subtle features, such as:
- Displaying Freenode ChanServ join notices in the chat window instead of as an IM from ChanServ
- Suppression of IRC topics that haven't changed
This plugin was formerly located at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim-irchelper before being merged into the Plugin Pack in version 1.0.
Using IRC Helper
The following explains configuring IRC Helper to automatically identify to services:
- Edit your IRC account (Tools->Manage Accounts, select your IRC account, click Modify).
- On the Basic tab, make sure the Password field is blank. This field is for the server password, which very few public servers use.
- On the Advanced tab:
- Fill in the Auth Name field with the nick of the services bot you authenticate to. Usually this is NickServ, but it's different on a few IRC networks.
- Fill in the Nick password field with the password you send to the services bot.
The Disconnect ghosts (Duplicate nicknames) option on the Advanced tab allows you to decide if you want IRC Helper to automatically terminate an existing occurrance of your nickname. This will disconnect only your configured nickname, not any additional duplicates.
Most IRC Helper features activate once you have configured identification to services. The suppression of messages and channel topics that haven't changed cannot be disabled.
