A test/preview button - either on the main preferences
page, or the preferences->themes page - would be a good
idea!

This is eventually planned, but to really test a theme we
need a way to edit the info that gets passed along to render
it.  And a intuitive ui for this has been what is holding it
back.

after next.

indeed would be nice. atm I have resorted to a second test 
account to trigger the guifications, or having to add myself as 
a buddy and then change my status.
